To actually kill bacteria you would need to use water much hotter than is available in the typical sink and would be too hot to tolerate, thus using hot water just wastes energy. The energy waste in the US is equivalent to the emissions of Barbados.

At Buffalo Exchange when customers decide to decline a bag for their goods, they are given a 5-cent token instead. They can then place the token into a box representing a charity. The Tokens for Bags program has raised nearly $525,000 and kept some 10.4 million bags out of the landfill.

When shipping goods, select ground transportation instead of rush or air delivery and cut down on fossil fuel use and pollution. Be careful to plan ahead and avoid overnight shipping, which burns the most fossil fuel per item. Ground shipping tends to be six times more energy efficient than air.
